Behold the real life Minority Report pre-crimes unit. The police in the Kanagawa Prefecture of Japan, which is not too far from Tokyo, will introduce artificial intelligence, predictive policing, which will anticipate the level of accidents and crimes to occur in the nearby future.

The Kanagawa police force is seeking research expenses from the government for the 2018 fiscal year in order to implement a predictive policing system on a trial basis before the start of the 2020 Olympics and Paralympics in Tokyo.

The system would analyze whether the perpetrator of multiple crimes is the same offender, predict the criminal’s next move and detect locations and times of when accidents would occur, which would allow the Kanagawa police to prevent some of the events from actually happening.

The Artificial Intelligence AI would utilize deep learning technology based upon metadata. It would rely upon programmed knowledge of criminology, mathematics, statistics, weather, dates, times, geographical locations and other various data about past crimes and accidents.

In addition, the AI may also use data from social media to compile profiles.

The Kanagawa police are already using a much scaled down version of the AI to reveal areas of frequent crime, but it is not a system capable of making extensive predictions.

Many police forces in the United States are currently using predictive software call PredPol, but it has largely come under fire from critics for human rights abuses, for allegedly promoting police prejudice and the targeting of residents for questioning and arrests in certain communities.
