What Equipment Should I Bring For Video Blogging In Japan

Are you wondering what equipment should bring for video blogging in Japan?

Video Production is my actual profession, but when I travel to Japan, it is mostly for my Japan vacation with video blogging as a hobby.

With a combination of my age, bad back (herniated disc from 10 years in Los Angeles as a professional Swing dancer), diabetes, the heat in the summer, and just plain old very long days traveling on foot, I’ve found that I like to keep the weight in my pack, and on my person, as light as possible.

On my first trip to Japan, I used an Ikan FLY-X3-PLUS 3-Axis Smartphone Gimbal Stabilizer and it was great and smooth. When I didn’t have my stabilizer, I tried static shots on a monopod that doubled as a walking stick. I’ve used my selfie stick as well to hold the camera, but although it’s great to get wider group static shots, it was horrible for moving camera shots and even wobbly on static shots. I’ve even used my GoPro HERO3+ Silver Edition on a bicycle, at a water park underwater and at the beach.

For some of the shots on my first trip, I also used an olloclip wide and telephoto lens with my iPhone 6 Plus.

On my last trip to Japan, I ended up just using an iPhone 7 PLUS, that with a steady hand, is magically smooth still or moving. It’s also very light and easy to use and carry.

I’ve used played around with an Osmo+, which is more like my Ikan Fly 3 Stabilizer on steroids, and if I wanted something more professional but did not want to bring my Canon Cinema EOS C300 Mark I, with which I’ve shot my green screen setups, along with wireless mics and a bag of lenses, the Osmo with the built-in camera is probably what I would use.

But again, sense my trips are mostly vacation and part business, not to mention I’m getting old and feeble, a decent cinematographers hand and some closeups to get better audio can do the trick if you need to travel ultra-lean.
