Traveling in Japan with Diabetes
Traveling in Japan with Diabetes can be challenging if you are not prepared.
Admittedly, my diabetes is not controlled the way it should be, or at least the way I want it to be. And traveling, especially overseas can be a hassle if youβre dealing with a disease and medications. However, have not fear. Just as there are world class professional athletes with diabetes, there are world travelers with diabetes.
Traveling In Japan With Diabetes - Always Check With Your Doctor Before Traveling To Japan
Double check with Japanese customs website which medicines are legal. Most prescription medications are legal, but some require a doctorβs letter, and others may be illegal outright. Tylenol in bulk, or anything with an ingredient that can be used to make a street drug, may be legal in small quantities, but illegal or suspicious in large quantities.
Always carry both prescription medicine in their original packages. Bring your actual prescription label with your prescription drugs. Bring over-the-counters medicine in its unopened original packaging for safety.
Any medicine that must be injected with a needle, require a doctor’s letter as well as a special form request from Japanese customs that must be completed before you travel.
Always back your prescription drugs in your carry on or personal item on the plane as anything can happen and you donβt want to be without your prescriptions.
Youβre going to be on your feet for 8 or more hours a day and physical activity can considerably lower your blood sugar. Also, considerable physical activity produces natural insulin in your body, and depending upon the individual and activity, the insulin could stay in your system for just a short time of for as long as 36 hours.
Traveling In Japan With Diabetes - Adjusting Your Diabetes Medications For Walking In Japan
So when traveling in Japan with diabetes with 8 or more hours of walking everyday, this could be a considerable change to your lifestyle and have an effect on the amount of medication you should be taking. As a general rule of thumb, 20 grams of sustenance, mostly protein, every 30 minutes is a good rule of thumb to keep your blood sugar balance.
I have had the best result with different types of Trail Mixes, especially from Trader Joeβs. Trader Joe’s Happy Trekking is my favorite and has balanced my sugar the best.
Traveling In Japan With Diabetes - Eating Snacks In Japan
After discovering which Japanese treats are appealing to your palette, although I had snacks in my pack, I frequent started buying snacks and treats, some with high carbs, which again throws another variable into how much you should or should not be eating and how much medicine you should or should or should not be taking. Kakigori, Japanese shaved iced, was definitely one of my favorites with red bean and matcha green tea syrup.
Always consult your doctor first before going on any trip and always use your best judgement and practice healthy eating habits.
