Surviving Your Flight To Japan

For those of you who drink, surviving your flight to Japan might be achieved through the many international flights with free alcoholic beverages which is pretty much unlimited.

I won’t lie, the party began on the plane.

Always pack your prescription medicine in your carry-on or personal items. Anything can happen. Don’t be without your meds, especially if, like me, you have diabetes.

Consider bringing a pillow, neck pillow and blanket on the plane for comfort. Also, consider bringing a memory foam seat cushion. Many of the US airlines have been cutting costs and our seats on our last Delta flight were much smaller than our JR Rail bullet train or rapid line seats.

Also, the seat cushion on our Delta flight had very little padding and the circulation began to slow from my buttocks to my legs. We ended up buying memory foam seat cushions while in Japan for the journey back to the US.

Get some compression socks. Sitting on a plane continuously for 12 or more hours is not the same as sitting at your desk at work and getting up and walking around continuously throughout the day.

You will like have edema (a buildup of fluid and swelling) in your legs and ankles from both the flight and walking around all day. Wear compression socks for a couple hours on and off on the plane and for about 20 or 30 minutes when you return to your room from sightseeing each day.

Don’t try and sit and sleep the entire flight. Get up every hour for a few minutes and stretch your legs and walk a few steps to the restroom and back.

 

For entertainment on the plane, I many services like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video or HBO Go let you download programs, but there is also a lot of free movies and TV programs on the plane.

I watched “Fist Fight” with Ice Cube one flight and it was absolutely hysterical. I was laughing so hard and rocking in my seat, I’m sure they would have thrown me off the plane if we weren’t in the air.
