Japanese Etiquette

Japanese Etiquette – Rules, rules, rules. Heard of the House of Blues, well Japan is the House of Rules.

Japan is an island nation with long and rich heritage and culture. It’s a very prideful, yet respectful culture, that is uber disciplined as it is polite.

Japanese Etiquette - Following Rules In Japan

Japanese Etiquette - Following Rules In Japan

Japanese people do not have problems following instructions and believe in the ways they are told to do things.

In the Akishima area of Tachikawa City in the Tokyo Prefecture, there loud speakers on the streets that gave you instructions throughout the day at times. It was very 1984 Orwellian at first, but it was more like a weather announcements for heatwaves and typhoons.

Japanese Etiquette - Tokyo Water Park

Japanese Etiquette - Tokyo Water Park

On my first trip, we want to a water park at a public park and they had loudspeakers as well, frequently announcing lots of rules. Every 50 minutes there was actually a mandatory rest period where everyone had to get out of the water for 10 minutes.

Even while leaving the park, the loudspeaker was announcing more rules. When I asked my wife what they were saying, she told me they were reminding people that they could not use the pool with any visible tattoos. When I asked why, she said that tattoos were traditionally associated with the Yakuza – Japanese mob/gangsters.

Lower your voice. Don’t be the big, bad, brash American. Humility can go a long way, especially if you can’t speak the language. A lot of Japanese people know some English and a stranger would be much more inclined to offer assistance if you carry yourself with respect, dignity and humility. Think of yourself as an ambassador for America and representing the best we have to offer.

If you only learn two words or phrases, the second should be β€œSumimasen,” which can be used for excuse me or I’m sorry. I use these two phrases all day long.

Japanese Etiquette - Taking Off Your Shoes In Japan

It is extremely disrespectful to wear shoes indoors. All restaurants will have a place to put your shoes before you enter the restaurant or your booth. Most will even have bathroom shoes for you to use if you enter the bathroom, and some even have room shoes for you to use after you leave your shoes at the front door.

You will also definitely have to take off your shoes at any temple you enter.

Not all toilets are sit down Western style toilets in Asia at large. You squat. Many of the parks and outdoor have squatting toilets, but some have both.

And bring a handkerchief or small hand towel wherever you go, as not every public Japanese bathrooms has paper towels or a hand dryer. It’s pretty standard for Japanese people to carry a hand towel, especially when riding the subway. A set of hand towels was actually my first gift from my mother-in-law.
