Genderless Fashion In Japan 2018 – Jendaresu-kei: Are They Straight Or Are They Gay? 🇯🇵 🏳️‍🌈 👬

In the uber-popular fashion haven of Harajuku, Tokyo Japan, Japanese men who label themselves, genderless, otherwise known as genderless-style or jendaresu-kei, strut the streets in with dyed hair, flawless makeup and plucked eyebrows, as they sashay…Shauntay? from boutique to boutique.

Jendaresu-kei usually refers to biologically born men who don’t want to look like a karoshi (dying by overworking) “suit”, but there are also women who also identify as genderless, although the women may more commonly dress in a stereotypical masculine way.

For some, like Japanese model and celebrity, Ryuchell, who claims to fashion himself after a Ken doll, he does not see himself as a cross dresser, gay or transgendered. Ryuchell is actually married to his wife, Peco.

Ryuchell and Peco separate the biological body from the accessorized body. They are not interested in conforming to stereotypes. It’s all about fashion and self-expression.

With matching fabrics and fingernails, kawaii cute purses and hats, they redefine masculinity and changing perceptions of the role of men in Japanese culture.

Japanese genderless style emerges in Tokyo in three dominant styles: 1) Androgynous “Visual-kei” K-Pop boy band style; 2) Flamboyant 80’s glam-rock style; and 3) 80’s and 90’s America bold colors with unusual and eye-catching combinations.

Masculine women and feminine men are not uncommon in Japanese culture in regards to cross-dressing in theater. In traditional Kabuki theater, women are portrayed by the onnagata – male actors who portray women. And female actors who portray men, the otokoyaku, are common in the Takarazuka Revue theater troupe.

Japan is also home to numerous cross-dressing clubs like Tokyo’s famous Elizabeth Club, which bills itself as a cross-dresser’s paradise, for middle age, white collar straight males who wish to transition from businessman to a female role in order to relieve stress.
