Eating Food In Japan

When eating food in Japan, you’re in Japan – get some sushi. There is no better.

Almost anywhere in Tokyo the sushi is going to be good. Keep in mind that Japan is a nation of islands, so if raw fish is not your fare, the fish in general, raw or cooked, is still to be very good and very fresh.

I even ate at a conveyor belt sushi restaurant in Akita.

Aside from sushi, one of my favorite things to eat in Japan is Yakiniku, which is technically Korean barbecue. Your order small portions of premium choice cuts, meats, poultry, fish and vegetable and grill it right in the middle of your table. Oishi (delicious).

With Indian actually being part of Southeast Asia, and Japanese standards extremely high, the Indian food I’ve tried has also been quite good.

I would frequent a small Indian restaurant for takeout while traveling through Akishima Station in Tachikawa City of the Tokyo Prefecture and I also had a delightful meal at an Indian Restaurant in the Tokyo Skytree observation tower.

In general, the Japanese have very high standards, so given the right dish, the food is quite excellent. Even McDonald’s, for me, is better in Japan, but burgers in general, I think are best in the greasy US. The Japanese have a dish called Hambagu, which is like a meatloaf with a lot of vegetable filler, and the burgers everywhere in Japan lean on the Hambagu side of beef.

You can find some American chains and brands, but they are usually the Japanese version. The sodas and energy drinks have less caffeine and they also have versions unavailable in the US, such as Coca-Cola Plus, which is a Coke Zero with 5 grams of liquid insolvable fiber to help keep you on the regular, as the carbon and soda can constipate you.

The Japanese version of French bakeries have extremely tasty breads, pastries and Danishes which are lighter in taste, made fresh daily, but still back a punch with carbohydrates.

In addition to bakeries, my favorites included Mister Donut, Filet-O-Shrimp Meal at McDonald’s, Kakigori (shaved ice), Melon Pan with handmade ice-cream, and Matcha Green Tea and Adzuki red bean anything.
