Have you ever dreamed it would be cool if you could operate a real life giant robot mech suit like the kind the Jaeger pilots operate in the Pacific Rim Uprising Kaiju homage film, well now it’s no longer a dream; it’s a rental.

Japanese robotics company, Sakakibara Machinery Works now has a new giant, fully functional robot suit, otherwise known as a mech, that looks straight out of Gundam manga. The 27.8 feet high suit, weighing 16,314 pounds, can be piloted by a single person. This giant exoskeleton robot suit is the company’s third since it unveiled its first giant mech in 2005.

Unlike the mechs in movies and manga, Sakakibara mechs aren’t actually weapons, but rather rentable, fun entertainment for parties and public events. The 2005 Landwalker mech model can shoot tennis balls and the 2013 Walker Cyclops mech is designed specifically for use by child pilots.

Sakakibara mechs are not the only functional mecha in Japan. Building mechs has become a Japanese cultural phenomenon that’s separate from traditional robotics. Traditional robotics are fully-functioning tech that can operate on their while mecha giant robots are only functional when a human is piloting them.

Mechs first debuted in manga in 1965 in Tetsujin 28-go, eventually lending way to iconic classics like Gundam, Gurren Lagann and Neon Genesis Evangelion. The Pacific Rim Uprising movie calls its giant robot suits Jaegers and are piloted by more than one person. The Jaeger in Pacific Rim Uprising is named Scrapper.
