Where Should You Stay in Japan
If you’re asking yourself, where should you stay in Japan, and you’re planning to visit downtown Tokyo, know that itβs a major city and very expensive, comparable to staying in Manhattan.
Staying in downtown Tokyo is convenient, but can also be overwhelming, not just in price, but in crowds, size, density and sensory overload. Between my diabetes, crowds, heat, and inability to speak or read the language, I nearly suffered a panic attack during my first trip.
Where Should You Stay in Japan: Staying With Friends And Family In Japan
With my wife being a Japanese native, we typically stayed with family in the Tokyo Prefecture in an area called Akishima in Tachikawa City.
This turned out to be a great stop as there was a train station with in walking / bus distance and 4 stops down the line to Tokyo, was a major stop at Tachikawa Station that allowed us to book rapid reserved cars with a JR Pass, for no additional charge, cutting a 60 minute tripping, possibly standing, into a 20 minute leisure ride.
As traveling in Japan is extremely easy to get around with the extensive subway and bus system, I would recommend that you save your money and stay a little bit further out. Staying further from the downtown corridor is not actually suburban at all.
Downtown Tokyo, a very old city, and Japan being an island, everything is built up quite densely like a major city almost an hour’s drive out from the center of downtown shopping in Tokyo in any direction.
Where Should You Stay in Japan: Kyoto Guest House And Hostel
When my wife, son and I went to Kyoto, we stayed in a private room hostel for about $80 a night called The Tomato Kyoto Guest House. It was clean and conveniently located about a 5 β 10 minute walk from Kyoto Station. The private room allowed use to lock up all our stuff.
The bathroom and shower were in the hallway, but it also had a common area kitchen if you wanted to cook, and a common area room with a TV if you wanted to meet other travelers. The private room was a essentially a room with a closet and place to sleep.
But keep in mind, it is Japan, so it was a bunk bed Japanese futon with a third futon on the floor, and of course, no shoes allowed past the front door on the street. You donβt need to bring room shoes (house shoes) or bathroom shoes, as those are provided everywhere you go.
